Fall suits Providence. College Hill turns shades of amber and gold, WaterFire lights the river after dark, and theater season returns just as the city settles into sweater weather. From The Beatrice, some of the best of it is within walking distance, with apple orchards and autumn traditions waiting just beyond downtown. Consider this your guide to fall in Providence, one very good reason to get outside at a time.
WaterFire continues on the rivers downtown with braziers burning along the water, music drifting through the city, and crowds gathering along the riverwalk. Fall full lightings take place September 6, September 26, October 17, and November 7, with a partial lighting on October 3 and smaller Starts at Sunset gatherings on September 17 and October 29.
October calls for a little spectacle. Each fall, Roger Williams Park Zoo transforms after dark as thousands of intricately carved pumpkins illuminate a winding trail through the grounds. Make an evening of it, then return downtown for a nightcap at Bellini.
A few blocks from The Beatrice, the RISD Museum brings together art, design, and objects spanning centuries and cultures. Wander the galleries at your own pace, discover what is new for the season, then continue through College Hill, where some of Providence's best architecture waits just outside.
A crisp fall day is lovely. A rainy one has its perks, too. Head to Providence Place for an afternoon of shopping, dining and entertainment, all just a short trip from The Beatrice.
On Stage This Fall
The lights are coming up at Providence Performing Arts Center. Just a short walk from The Beatrice, PPAC welcomes a new season of Broadway, music, and spectacle to its historic stage. Make dinner at Bellini part of the evening, then take your seats for some of fall's biggest performances.

A Sunday morning in Providence should involve a little wandering. The Providence Flea brings together local makers, vintage finds, artists, food, and more, with outdoor markets continuing into early fall and special markets popping up as the season moves indoors.
Providence has had centuries to collect a few ghost stories. Walk the historic streets of College Hill after dark and discover tales of local legends, unexplained happenings, and some of the city's most storied residents. Seasonal tours also explore the darker literary side of Providence, including the city known by Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft.
There are libraries, and then there is the Providence Athenaeum. Standing on Benefit Street since 1838, the independent library has welcomed generations of readers, writers, and thinkers, including Edgar Allan Poe and Providence poet Sarah Helen Whitman.
Trade city streets for country roads and head just beyond Providence for one of New England's essential fall rituals. Steere Orchard has been family-owned and operated for generations, with apple picking, pumpkins, and the kind of crisp autumn afternoon that practically requires cider. Come hungry. Cider donuts are part of the plan.
Providence has its own way of doing things, including seeing the city by gondola. Step aboard La Gondola for a leisurely ride along the Providence and Woonasquatucket Rivers, passing beneath bridges and alongside the historic architecture of downtown. In fall, with the leaves changing along the riverbanks, the view gets even better.
